It was love at first sight!
It was in Silliman "love-rary" that Cupid shot his first dart. Gali was working at the main desk when his eyes flew towards a new face, that summer in 1949. He immediately went over the borrower's files and there he came to know that she was Josefina Cunanan, a newcomer to Silliman. Gali didn't know Josie but Cupid again shot another dart and before he knew it, he went to her table where she was browsing over some reference books.
"Hi, good afternoon. Will you please do me the favor of giving this note to Meding Estampador?" Meding was a big sister at the dorm at Oriental Hall. Josie was surprised. She was aghast! Somehow, Gali was able to get a close-up of her. She obliged and he said thanks. He didn't even introduce himself. Two strangers in the afternoon, but truly their eyes met. |

The First Visit

|
This photo became discolored through time, but we included it here bec. of its significance. |
Gali made an appointment with Josie at her dorm one Sunday, following Founder's Day - around the last date of August 1949. Gali was in full formal clothes, neck and tie, just like fresh from the movies. Gali's friend - Ben Somera took this photo. Josie looked so shy and demure. She could not believe it when Gali told her that she was going to be Mrs. Sibala! What guts and nerve of a man! But Gali could feel that inside her, she was tickled.
Several dates to the University cafeteria followed and excursions to the beach. They became closer and closer to each other. They were starting to know each other and even without saying the three funny words, yet she knew that he loved her and of course,
he knew that she loved him too. Two hearts, two lives - joined together
and united forever in love.

To cut a long story short, they decided to get married on
March 25, 1951. They were still students then. Gali was
starting his senior year in College of Law while Josie was
finishing her degree in Education - all in Silliman University.
And so the story goes - they lived happily ever after! |
